Vibrant nightlife can be found on Varick Street, otherwise referred to as in the Brewery District since 1978 when The Brewery built the Brewery Shop. It is also the finish line to the Boilermaker Road Race and host to many pubs and independent music venues.
As one of the few remaining great American regional breweries, the Matt Brewing Company has prospered at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Central New York for over a century. Under the leadership of the third (Nick) and fourth (Fred) generations of the Matt Family, the Brewery has earned the reputation as one of the most respected specialty brewers in the country, producing a variety of distinctive, flavorful beers.
The largest and most competitive 15K race in the Nation, The Boilermaker Road Race was established in 1978 by Earle C. Reed as a way to give back to the community that had supported his family’s business, Utica Boilers (now ECR International). The 15K road race began with just over 800 runners and a budget of $750. Today it hosts over 17,000 runners/ year. Boilermaker Weekend, typically the first weekend in July, offers events for participants of every age and skill level. It has grown to include fitness and special events, such as a 5K Race, a 3 Mile Walk, a Kids' Run, an Invitational Mile and a Health Expo at MVCC.
