Concerts & Shows
As part of our Regional Artists Series, The Stanley is delighted to feature the photography of Tom McCarthy.
While I have been taking photographs for over 20 years, I am constantly learning how to be a better photographer. I enjoy pushing myself to take better photographs and also experimenting with the digital camera - even when I think something probably won’t work because I learn from the process and the failures as much as I do from the ‘good’ photos. I take photographs of whatever happens to grab my attention and so they span a wide range of subjects, but I often focus on natural and biological themes – probably not surprising given that I am a biology professor. Regardless of the subject matter, my goal is to capture a moment and I often look for a sense of simplicity in the composition. I am interested in finding interplays of light and dark, scale, contrasts in textures and colors, odd angles, and interesting perspectives. I attempt to show things in ways that they have not been commonly viewed.-Tom McCarthy
