It’s been a Central New York holiday tradition for 45 year’s! The Nutcracker is performed by the Mohawk Valley Ballet.
Tzchaikovsky's The Nutcracker is the story of a little girl's magical adventure on Christmas Eve. When Clara Stahlbaum's Uncle Drosselmeyer shows up at the family holiday party things take an enchanting turn. After entertaining the guests with his life-size dancing dolls he gives Clara her present, a nutcracker doll. Once the guests have gone home and the house is quiet Clara comes back downstairs to check on her nutcracker. The magic begins as she notices the Christmas tree is growing as the room fills with mice and rats. The nutcracker comes to life and leads the toy soldiers against the evil rat king. After the battle, the nutcracker transforms into a Prince and takes Clara on a journey through the Land of Snow to the Land of Sweets. From cherubs and bon-bons to angels and snowflakes, Clara meets a variety of colorful characters who perform for her along the way, leading up to the grand pas de deux danced by the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince. In the final scene Clara is awakened by her mother. She was sleeping on the parlor floor, the nutcracker at her side. Could it really have been just a dream?
School performances of The Nutcracker will be held on Thursday, November 29th & Friday, November 30th. *Reservations for the school performances can be made online at mvballet.org.
