In the Mood

The brassy, All-American celebration of Swing Jazz, brings a cast of nineteen featuring the blistering String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra and inexhaustible IN THE MOOD Singers and Swing Dancers from New York, on a nostalgic journey through the music which guided a nation's spirit towards hope, promise and prosperity.

The 1940's was a time when America was in tune with sentimental ballads and up-tempo Swing rhythms, where the waltz and foxtrot competed with the wild, acrobatic jitterbug, jive and boogie woogie crazed Hepcats on the ballroom dance floor.

IN THE MOOD recreate this defining era live on stage through sizzling choreography, sensational scats and romantic harmonies, sassy costumes and an hypnotic thirteen-piece Big Band, belting out an authentic score of over fifty unforgettable hits from Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and the Andrews Sisters -

Chattanooga Choo Choo, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (of Company B), In The Mood, Tuxedo Junction, Sing, Sing, Sing, Sentimental Journey and so much more.

Now in its eighteenth season of sold out performances throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, IN THE MOOD was performed at an Inaugural Ball for President Clinton and selected by World USO as an official entertainment for the 50th Commemoration of World War II.

IN THE MOOD Creator, Producer and Artistic Director Bud Forrest was also the accompanist for the official United States Air Force Chorus, the Singing Sergeants and says:

"Many of the arrangements were written by Vic Schoen, the conductor for the Andrews Sisters and Musical Director for Universal and Paramount Pictures. The songs are timeless and this production is as authentic as it gets. We are thrilled and honoured to be touring IN THE MOOD Down Under!" Hep cats, lindy-hoppers and fans of the Big Bands, get ready to swing to the music which continues to inspire!

Blue Man Group

One of the great things about the nationally acclaimed BLUE MAN GROUP is that it appeals to all ages. Kids will enjoy the lights, color and spectacle. Adults enjoy the humor, social commentary and depth of the character. Even the hardened theatre critic finds a deeper message behind the fun and mess. We encourage casual attire for the show-especially if you sit in the "poncho" section. Jeans and sneakers are ideal, but call early for information on special "pit" tickets!

The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performances, including her time as a fan favorite on this season’s “Dancing With The Stars.”

Knight, known as the "Empress of Soul," a longtime Las Vegas resident, returned to the Strip this past year to the famed Tropicana Hotel for a special engagement that ran in the newly named Gladys Knight Theater, making her the first African- American performer to have a venue named after her in Las Vegas. And last fall she was honored with the "Legend Award" at the 2011 Soul Train Awards. As a solo artist she has won four GRAMMY Awards including Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal with Elton John, Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder for "That's What Friends Are For" in 1986, and Best Gospel Choir Or Chorus Album for One Voice in 2005.

West Side Story

More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it's back and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time. This revival, based on Tony Award-winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction, remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway's finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere." As the Associated Press says, “West Side Story remains Broadway’s best dance-driven musical. Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout.”

John Matthews

As part of our Regional Artists Series, The Stanley is delighted to feature the photography of John Matthews.

John Matthews is an avid photographer whose mobile photography has been featured on Fox News and in the New York Times. His work has been previously shown at The Stanley as well as the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. He has also done professional freelance work for the Condé Nast Traveler Network and has covered popular events such as SXSW and ComicCon International. John has been at the forefront of the emerging mobile photography movement and more of his work can be found at his website.

My iPhone provides me with a very convenient photographic tool with a surprising amount of flexibility and capability. It allows me to improve my photographic eye while being able to instantly share my images with other photographers around the world. I can, quite literally, carry my entire creative workflow in my pocket. The ability to instantly make a photograph, quickly edit it and share it across social media platforms can be an incredibly rewarding process. Many of the scenes in my photographs would not have been captured had I not had my iPhone in my pocket. It is this element of immediacy and randomness that adds an additional layer of context to my images.

I am very intrigued by the advances in camera technology. As optics improve and electronics become smaller while providing increased performance, the quality gap between large DSLR cameras and mobile phone cameras will narrow. As mobile phone cameras continue to improve and become more pervasive, amateur and professional photographers will be able to capture a more uniquely framed perspective of the world around us. I think this is very exciting.

-John Matthews

All are invited to attend the opening reception, being held January 10, 2013 at 5:00 PM in the Upper South Wing Gallery. The reception is free to the public. Refreshments and cash bar generously provided by Daniele's Banquet Specialists.

Matthews' photography will be on display through the month of January, available to view in the Upper South Wing Tolles Gallery at The Stanley, Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Sesame Street Live

Elmo Makes Music

Mark your calendar for a musical event like no other—monsters making music! Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird and all their Sesame Street friends are taking to the stage to share their love of music in Sesame Street Live “Elmo Makes Music” at Stanley Theatre on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Tickets for all 2 performances go on sale November 26.

Jenny, an enthusiastic new music teacher, arrives on Sesame Street only to discover that her instruments are missing. Jenny’s new Muppet friends quickly come to the rescue and discover ‘instruments’ they never knew existed…rubber duckies, trash can lids and even cookie jars. Elmo, Abby Cadabby and friends teach children that everyone can make and enjoy beautiful music together.

Like television’s Sesame Street, each Sesame Street Live production features timeless lessons for all ages. Through the razzle-dazzle of this Broadway-quality musical production, children learn about patience, acceptance and teamwork. The universal appeal of a Sesame Street Live production continues long after preschool. Adults will appreciate the high-tech stagecraft, cleverly written scripts, and music they’ll recognize and enjoy sharing with children, such as “The Hustle,” “You Should Be Dancing” and “Rockin’ Robin.” “Elmo Makes Music” features nearly two dozen songs, including classics that children will love to sing along with such as “C Is for Cookie” and “The Alphabet Song.”

Tom McCarthy

As part of our Regional Artists Series, The Stanley is delighted to feature the photography of Tom McCarthy.

While I have been taking photographs for over 20 years, I am constantly learning how to be a better photographer. I enjoy pushing myself to take better photographs and also experimenting with the digital camera - even when I think something probably won’t work because I learn from the process and the failures as much as I do from the ‘good’ photos. I take photographs of whatever happens to grab my attention and so they span a wide range of subjects, but I often focus on natural and biological themes – probably not surprising given that I am a biology professor. Regardless of the subject matter, my goal is to capture a moment and I often look for a sense of simplicity in the composition. I am interested in finding interplays of light and dark, scale, contrasts in textures and colors, odd angles, and interesting perspectives. I attempt to show things in ways that they have not been commonly viewed.

-Tom McCarthy

More of McCarthy's work can be found on his blog or on facebook.

All are invited to attend the opening reception, being held February 22, 2013 at 5:00 PM in the Upper South Wing Gallery.
Maria Cavo

As part of our Regional Artists Series, The Stanley is delighted to feature the art of Maria Cavo.

This current body of work is an exploration of a new medium and is for me the most exhilarating and fulfilling to date.

My many years working from live models in 3D and a fascination with the human form, have both paved the way and laid out the ground work of my personal evolution and growth as an artist.

Vibrant colors of vinyl cut and applied to paper as collage transforms the model posing before me with a minimalistic approach that has a 3D feel. With the use of positive and negative space, figures appear suspended in an altered reality suggestive of illusions, dreams or themes. Even the most abstract of these collage images have a figural origin that challenges the viewers' senses and interpretations. -Maria Cavo

More of Cavo's work can be found here .

All are invited to attend the opening reception, being held May 3, 2013 at 5:00 PM in the Loretta M. Romano Room. The reception is free to the public. Refreshments and cash bar provided.

Cavo's work will be on display through June 4, 2013, available to view in the Loretta M. Romano Room at The Stanley, Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
