The Stanley Welcomes Jerry Kraus as Executive Director

Scott Shatraw, president of The Stanley Center for the Arts Board of Directors, announced today the appointment of Jerry Kraus as The Stanley’s new Executive Director, starting June 1st. Kraus will be stepping down as the face of the Stevens-Swan Humane Society where he had held the post of Public Relations and Development Director. Kraus, also known as “The Doctor” for his 30+ years of local radio experience, holds a Master’s Degree in Administration from Syracuse University.

Jerry Kraus has a life-long relationship with The Stanley and the arts community. Growing up locally, he was a regular at concerts and performances at the theater. He has been a board member of The Stanley for the past four years and a member of The Broadway Theatre League of Utica for the past seven years. Kraus said, “It’s bittersweet to leave the Stevens-Swan Humane Society after five years of real success. I have enjoyed my time there, working with a dedicated staff and, of course, helping the animals. But the opportunity to lead The Stanley, a great historical treasure and our local center for arts and entertainment, was something I just couldn’t pass up.”

On his plans for continuing the theater’s success, Kraus believes in reaching out. “I will be hosting an open forum to get our community’s input on what events they’d like to see and support. I’d really like to see The Stanley become our entire community’s theater, with something for everyone. I’m looking forward to continuing our strong relationships with local groups like the Broadway Theater League of Utica and Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute.” said Kraus.

The Stanley has been without an Executive Director throughout the past year. Mr. Shatraw believes the time has been well spent, “our search committee looked at many candidates. It’s fitting that the person most suited for the position is someone who will be a true local ambassador not just an administrator.”

It is something like 28, 29 years.”

Rolf said that his time at The Stanley has been filled with a variety of experiences, including talking to singer Tony Bennett.

“Because he sings a song about San Francisco, most people believe he came from California,” he said. “However, he and I both lived in Astoria, Queens. When I was a young man and he was a bit younger than I, I saw him perform in a nightclub in that area. So, I knew of him when he was starting out. When he was here, I asked the theater manager if I could go backstage and say hello to him. He was kind of shocked to find there was someone from Astoria, Queens who knew him as a young man. We chatted a little bit. To me, that’s a favorite memory because I was able to meet someone from my own area in Utica, N.Y.”

Rolf moved to Utica 43 years ago for work. At the time, he was working for a union that was responsible for telephone installation and telephone line maintenance. Rolf was sent to Utica to organize an effort to organize telephone operators.

“They sent me up here and gave me a telephone number and said, ‘If you have a problem, call this telephone number and we will send someone to help you.’”

One of the people who was sent to help would end up becoming his wife.

Jane, Rolf’s wife, is also a volunteer at The Stanley. Among other duties, they are both tour guides. Rolf said that Jane’s tour is very informative.

“I always like to tell people, if you go on a tour with me, mine is kind of a fun tour,” he said. “I like to add a little comedy or relief to it.”

Rolf loves volunteering at The Stanley; helping those who come to The Stanley, whether it be showing them where to go or sharing his knowledge of the building himself, brings him joy.

“The Stanley is a wonderful place to come to offer your services because when you do, the people who come are in a good mood to see something and when they leave the performances, they are exhilarated,” he said. “It’s a pleasant evening, meeting the public. You feel like you’re doing something because of your knowledge of the seating or your knowledge at the door. I’ve had the pleasure of doing every position there is at this place, whether it be selling things for a vendor, whether it’s been at the door to greet the people and take their ticket and assign them to the proper aisle, or whether I was a captain of the aisle and helped my ushers seat the people in the proper location.”

Rolf has a soft spot in his heart for the children’s performances at The Stanley. He played a vital role in revamping the bus numbering system used to get the children back on their buses in an orderly and safe manner. Rolf has not missed a single children’s show since that system was put into place.

“This has extended my life, seriously. I’m 93 now. It’s a record at my age now… I enjoy doing it.”

Behind the Scenes: Ann Maycock

Sitting at a desk in the box office, Ann Maycock explains the premise of Shut Up Sit Down & Eat to a customer on the phone, her signature can of Diet Pepsi to her right. Ann recently celebrated her 26th Stanley Anniversary. This time included both volunteering and working.

In Ann’s estimation, the customer base is one of the best things about working at The Stanley. “I like meeting most of the customers,” she said. “I’ve met lots of different and nice people.”

This variety of people goes beyond customers. In her time at The Stanley, Ann met singer John Denver and actor Ted Neeley, who is best known for his role as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Ann also appreciates The Stanley building itself. “I love the beauty of it,” she said. “It’s like a second home to me now.”

She has seen many shows in her time at The Stanley. “I would hate to pick a favorite show out of the last 26 years. I have seen some pretty great shows.”

Shows at The Stanley have provided some memorable moments for Ann. One night that sticks out in Ann’s mind was when Dolly Parton came to The Stanley. There was a snowstorm; Ann recalls there being nearly 30 inches of snow. “I was really worried I might have had to spend the night here,” she said. “If it wasn’t for one of the stagehands with a truck, I wouldn’t have gotten home.”

Ann has spent a good amount of time doing ticket sales and has done so in different places.

At The Stanley, Phish fans, in particular, have turned to Ann for hard-to-find tickets for the band’s New Year’s Eve show at Madison Square Garden. As The Stanley sells tickets through Ticketmaster for regional events, they are able to get tickets for Phish’s New Year’s Eve show and Ann tries her best to get those tickets for fans. People have even come from Vermont to camp out and get these tickets from The Stanley’s box office. Ann said that her daughter Katie is a Phish fan who missed out on the New Year’s Eve show in the past, and she understands how important it is to those fans.

Ann started out selling hockey tickets, for 31 years, at both the Clinton Area and the Utica Memorial Auditorium. She began her ticketing career when she offered to sell tickets to hockey games in 1958 at the Clinton Arena in order to secure herself a seat at the games. This led to over a decade-long career at the Aud, then to her current position at The Stanley.

Her grandchildren are athletes, so watching sporting events is one of her many pastimes. Her oldest grandson, Dan Maycock, is the head coach for the MVCC hockey team and her two younger grandsons play hockey now. Over the years, Ann and her husband have traveled across Massachusetts and New York to attend their grandchildren’s baseball and hockey games.

Ann enjoys traveling and has been to all of the lower 48 states as well as Ireland, England and Scotland. One of her favorite trips is to visit her brother in Hilton Head, S.C.

She does not have to travel far to see her three children and four grandchildren, who she is happy to say all live locally.

Joining the Orchestra as the soloist for the evening’s program will be violinist and concert master MICHAEL LUDWIG. This concert is a part of the 2012 BUFFALO PHILHARMONIC SUMMER TOUR sponsored by FIRST NIAGARA BANK. Proceeds will go to THE STANLEY and THE UTICA SYMPHONY.

In announcing this event, Joel McKissick, Executive Director of The Stanley, noted that the Stanley Board of Directors is “thrilled the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing at The Stanley following their performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC).” Commenting on its partnering with The Stanley, The Utica Symphony Board President, Gustave J. DeTraglia, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for both The Stanley and The Utica Symphony to benefit from the performance and for the community to experience a special taste of the Arts in our own backyard.”

The Buffalo Philharmonic, which celebrated its 75th Anniversary Season last year, continues to build on its rising profile as one the most artistically vibrant, innovative ensembles in the US. Under the leadership of its renowned Music Director, JOANN FALLETTA, lauded by the New York Times as “one of the finest conductors of her generation,” the BPO continues to gain more international attention.

Over the past decade, the ensemble has risen to a new level of national and international prominence as a result of programming, recording and outreach initiatives spearheaded in part by Maestro Falletta. It has been bringing the community together for nearly a century with live concerts, Broadway shows, ballets, the symphony, graduations, and recitals. Today The Stanley operates as a non-profit entity. In 2006, through grants and donations, the theatre underwent a $20 million renovation that expanded the facility giving it a larger backstage space and catering capabilities for conferences and events. The Society had a large chorus and symphony orchestra, both under the direction of Berrian R. Shute. George M. Weaver, Jr. served as the first president of the Society. In 1933, Nicholas Gualillo and 60 musicians reorganized into the Utica Symphonic Orchestra. In 1935 the Utica Civic and the Utica Symphonic merged, and from 1935 to 1940, Shute and Gualillo acted as joint conductors of the new Utica Orchestra. This orchestra remained under the auspices of the Civic Musical Society, which announced that its chief aim was to broaden the circle of concert goers in Utica and vicinity. In 1983 the name of the organization was changed to Utica Symphony, Inc. The last conductor was Charles Schneider.

uticanysymphony@gmail.com

ABOUT THE BUFFALO PHILHARMONIC

Among the most significant achievements of the past decade has been the Buffalo Philharmonic’s return to recording, releasing 12 discs on the NAXOS label over the course of 10 years, earning two Grammy Awards and five Grammy nominations, and making the BPO one of the most frequently recorded orchestras in the country. Most recently, the Orchestra released three CDs – Polish Masterworks features works by prominent composers Henri Wieniawski, Witold Lutoslawski, Karol Szymanowski and Mieczyslaw Karlowicz, recorded live at concerts in Kleinhans Music Hall. Also released was the first CD in the BPO’s Great Performances series, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, Opus 35 and Franz Schreker’s Prelude to a Drama. This will be the orchestra's 24th appearance at Carnegie Hall and its first since Music Director JoAnn Falletta led the orchestra in a much heralded appearance there in June 2004.

The Buffalo Philharmonic has rekindled its history of NPR broadcasts; in the 2012 season the ensemble is scheduled to broadcast a number of concerts nationally on NPR’s Performance Today and SymphonyCast, and internationally through the European Broadcasting Union. The BPO has toured widely across the United States and Canada including a recent Florida Friends Tour with JoAnn Falletta in March 2010, the first multi-city tour since the 1988 European tour. Since 1940, the orchestra’s permanent home has been Kleinhans Music Hall, a National Historic Site with an international reputation as one of the finest concert halls in the United States.

ABOUT MICHAEL LUDWIG

Hailed by Strad Magazine for his "effortless, envy-provoking technique… sweet tone, brilliant expression, and grand style", Michael Ludwig is a highly sought-after soloist, recording artist and chamber musician.
McKissick Leaves The Stanley Positioned for the Future

May 10, 2012, Utica, NY— The Stanley Theater announced today the departure of its Executive Director, Joel McKissick, at the end of this month. While Mr. McKissick was only at The Stanley for fourteen months, the impact of his tenure will be lasting. He not only stabilized the theatre after the $21M renovation, but also he set a course for a better future by dramatically cutting costs, diversifying the programming, and hiring experienced professionals in key positions.

“There are so many plans in the works, great things, and a great fall schedule, that I am confident The Stanley is on its way to returning to the important position it once served in the community,” said McKissick, who is leaving to be the Operations Director for the Visual & Performing Arts Department at LeMoyne College.

“We are saddened that Joel is departing, and at the same time we are happy for him,” said Steve Zogby, President of The Stanley Board of Directors. “He did a lot in a short period of time to help the theatre, and we are definitely moving in the right direction.”

McKissick, originally hired as the Director of Operations, was promoted to Executive Director after three months. His first order of business was to examine and cut costs. Mr. McKissick reduced staffing expenses by $100K annually, identified and eliminated programming that was unprofitable, and secured a large grant from The Community Foundation that was vital to on-going operations. In terms of programming, he introduced promoters who had never presented at The Stanley and reintroduced promoters who had not presented since the renovations.

“There were many hard decisions that had to be made to put The Stanley on the path to viability,” stated Mr. McKissick. “I hope that what I’ve done has put the organization in a position to succeed in the future.”

Mr. McKissick made three important hires for the theatre in development, marketing, and the box office.

Anne Van Strander

Mrs. Van Strander is Director of Institutional Advancement at The Stanley. She formerly served as Director of Community Development for The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, was staff liaison to the Friends of the Arc Foundation, and an active member of the state wide NYSARC Public Information Committee. Mrs. Van Strander, who is well known within the community for her work with non-profit organizations, brings over 20 years experience in fund development, membership campaigns, volunteer coordination, and special event planning to her new position at The Stanley. She joined the theatre at the end of January this year. Since arriving, she revamped the membership program, folding in other development programs, such as naming a seat and signage opportunities (lobby panels and marquee), to create a strong and meaningful membership that is valuable to both individuals and businesses.

Francesca Dunlevy

Ms. Dunlevy runs the Marketing and Communications for The Stanley. She has over 20 years experience and owns her own company, Ekco Corporate Communications. She is a contract employee of the theatre. Ms. Dunlevy has a strong background working with small, mid-size and Fortune 500 profit, non-profit, private and pubic companies that came from working at large NY advertising agencies, such as Ogilvy & Mather, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Grey, to name a few. A Utica native and graduate of New Hartford High School, Ms. Dunlevy recently relocated back to the area. She joined The Stanley in February of this year. Since coming to the theatre, she fielded research to identify issues and opportunities, collaborated with Mrs. Van Strander on the development and launch of the new membership program, and identified alternative revenue streams for the theatre, some of which has been set into motion with the re-launch of the Web site and the e-commerce capabilities.

Monica Price

Mrs. Price is the Box Office Manager. Formerly the Box Office Manager for Turning Stone Resort & Casino, she served on the casino’s PGA Committee and has worked with non-profit organizations, such as Glimmerglass Opera. Mrs. Price brings thirteen years of experience in management, ticketing, volunteer coordination, marketing, and group sales to The Stanley. Mrs. Price, who is a Utica native, developed and launched a new group sales program, developed high standards for customer service, and hired two new staff members due to an increase in business since her arrival in July of 2011.

About The Stanley

Originally built as a movie theatre, The Stanley opened its doors in 1928 with 2,963 seats, a grand entry staircase that resembles the main staircase on the Titanic, a gold leaf interior, and a terra cotta and tiled mosaic exterior. It has been bringing the community together for nearly a century with live concerts, Broadway shows, ballets, the symphony, graduations, and recitals. This orchestra remained under the auspices of the Civic Musical Society, which announced that its chief aim was to broaden the circle of concertgoers in Utica and its vicinity.

Utica, NY, Thursday, April 26, 2012 – The Stanley and Trainor Digital unveiled a new website at thestanley.org that delivers to visitors the 'Live on the Edge of Your Seat' experience of being in the theatre. The site was developed in three (3) short months, half the time it typically takes to launch a website of this size and magnitude.

“This website gives The Stanley the ability to be competitive with other entertainment options in the area,” states Joel McKissick, Executive Director at The Stanley. Francesca Dunlevy, Marketing and Communications Consultant at The Stanley, adds, “We are especially excited about the ability it will give us to engage with the community and deliver a unique Stanley experience that comes through continuous feedback and dialogue.”

“We were more than happy to collaborate with The Stanley to deliver something very special,” says Tim Trainor, President of Trainor Associates and Trainor Digital. “The support we had at The Stanley made the process run smoothly, and what is even more exciting is that the new site not only will help The Stanley with business, but it also will be good for the region at a time where there are many exciting things happening in the arts community that is developing in Downtown Utica.”

Trainor used what Bob Annal, Director of Technology at Trainor, calls ‘bleeding edge” technology, something Trainor is delivering to clients in major markets. The site utilizes responsive design, which automatically adapts for screens on desktop computers to mobile devices, such as phones and tablets. Some of the key features of the new site include a ‘view from your seat,’ a gallery that puts the visitor right in the theatre, a blog for fast communication, and a content management system that will enable The Stanley to easily keep the site fresh.

Jonathan Trainor, Vice President at Trainor Digital, explains, “As a brand growth strategy company, we effectively position our client's brands online so that they achieve the most ROI, and we deliver websites that are turnkey for a client if they desire.” While designing the site, Trainor followed a 3-step process that marries the aesthetic design with the interface design and the information design.

Additionally, the new site is a strong branding tool for The Stanley. “As someone who grew up going to performances at The Stanley, it was very exciting to bring to life the memories I’ve personally had there,” says Eric Procopio, Director of Web Development at Trainor Digital. “From the first moment you are on the site, we want visitors to feel as though they are sitting in this beautiful theatre and experiencing all that it has to offer.’

About The Stanley
Originally built as a movie theatre, The Stanley opened its doors in 1928 with 2,963 seats, a grand entry staircase that resembles the main staircase on the Titanic, a gold leaf interior, and a terra cotta and tiled mosaic exterior.
